Returning for its fourth year, Shop The Neighbourhood is a fabulous local shopping awareness campaign, created by Yellow Pages, that is dedicated to encouraging Canadian consumers to shop locally, and to celebrating the small businesses that serve as the backbone of our neighbourhoods.
Previously a one-day event aimed at challenging large-scale shopping holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Shop The Neighbourhood is now expanding into a year-round campaign. The goal of the revamped initiative is to celebrate small businesses year-round and remind Canadians how shopping locally impacts our local economies and makes a difference in our lives.
We love to shop, and definitely prefer spending our hard-earned dollars at smaller, locally owned and run businesses, rather than the big box chain stores—these small businesses are our economic backbone: they create jobs, funnel funds back into the community, keep decision-making power localized, and generally contribute to building healthy, thriving neighbourhoods.
Also, local shopping reduces environmental impact. Supporting businesses close to home reduces commuting distances, motor vehicle traffic circulation and subsequently emissions related to these activities—we much prefer walking to our local shops than driving everywhere!
We reside in the “South Granville” neighbourhood, which is nestled between W. 5th and 16th Avenues, and a block either side of Granville Street. This prestigious Vancouver shopping destination is home to a vast selection of art galleries, high-end boutiques, and outstanding eateries. Two local businesses that we frequent often are Project Skin MD and WANT Apothecary…
Project Skin MD may be known for their medical facials and aesthetic dermatology, laser and anti-aging medicine, but they also have an impressive beauty boutique, where you can pick up skin care items from SkinCeuticals, and other notable brands (1495 W. 11th Ave., 604-732-0800, projectskinmd.com).
Exquisitely curated, WANT Apothecary showcases unique high-end fashion labels and must-have beauty products, such as Nudie Jeans Co., Acne Studio, and Ursa Major. Definitely check out their own premium collection of leather goods, WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie (2956 Granville St., 604-731-4957, wantapothecary.com).
