A great way to experience West Hollywood is by bike. We hooked up with the extremely personable Erick Martinez from Bikes and Hikes LA to explore LA’s most glamorous neighborhoods, Beverly Hills, Bel Air and West Hollywood, and pedal past some celebrity homes 🙂 .
During our fascinating three-hour guided tour, we cycled by Marilyn Monroe’s old apartment, Greystone Mansion (used as a filming location for X-Men, Star Trek, and Spideman III, to name only a few), Rodeo Drive, and stopped for photos in front of the iconic Beverly Hills sign, all while Erick shared countless stories and historic facts, and dished up some juicy celebrity gossip.
Art enthusiasts will want to spend half a day or more at the acclaimed J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center, situated at the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. Opened in 1997, the prestigious museum consists of five two story pavilions, clustered around a spacious central courtyard, which house the substantial, and constantly expanding, permanent collections.
In until the end of July, a major two-part retrospective exhibition on the controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, entitled Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium, is on display at The Getty, and also at The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), who is hosting the other half of the exhibition. The two exhibitions are drawn from the landmark joint acquisition and gift of art and archival materials made in 2011 by the J. Paul Getty Trust and LACMA from the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. This is a must-see!
