From last minute local shopping to soaking in whimsical sights, it’s the most wonderful time of the year in YYC. Here are our top 5 things to do this Christmas in Calgary…
1. Shop local
Show local artisans some love by shopping the holiday edition of Market Collective (197 1st St. SW, Calgary). Look for under-the-tree-worthy buys including art, clothing, beauty products and more, plus food and entertainment to be enjoyed by yours truly.
2. See the lights
Pick the perfect snowy soiree and stroll or drive through the Lions’ Festival of Lights along 14th St. NW. Haven’t had your fill of lights? Marvel at Zoolight‘s (1300 Zoo Rd. NE, Calgary) 1.5 million sparklers while enjoying the on-site skating rink, fire pits and all-around holiday cheer.
3. Head for the hills
A picturesque winter wonderland that’s scenic 90-minute drive from the city? It has to be the Fairmont Banff Springs (405 Spray Ave., Banff), where Christmas at the Castle is in full swing. Activities ranging from heritage tours to cooking decorating workshops abound, and the celebrations wrap up with a sumptuous New Year’s Gala on the 31st. Cheers!
4. Celebrate Christmas past
Wagon rides, carolling, St. Nick himself… A beautiful throwback celebration awaits at Heritage Park (1900 Heritage Dr. SW, Calgary).
5. Earn your hot chocolate
Whether you opt for skating under the stars at Olympic Plaza (228 8 Ave. SE, Calgary) or skiing and tubing (with guest of honour Santa, thankyouverymuch) at Nakiska, playing outside is our favourite way of enjoying the season.
