What To Eat When You Have A Cold

Your nose is so congested and you can’t taste a thing and you have zero appetite but skipping your meals is a bad idea when you’ve come down with a cold. There is truth to the saying that you should feed a cold – it’ll help keep your immune system well nourished so that you can bounce back from your cold – here are the foods you should be having.

Chicken soup: Yes, it’s not just an old wive’s tale. Chicken soup is indeed good for your when you have a cold. Besides helping to hydrate you, chicken soup was found to have particular anti-inflammatory properties, which may help you get back on your feet faster. In addition, the heat of the soup is also beneficial.

Fruit juices: Or tea. Most beverages will benefit you by replenishing your body with fluids (colds dehydrate your body). And while most people tend to reach for orange juice, you may be interested to know that a review of past studies found that it has little effect on the common virus (vitamin C may slightly reduce the severity of your symptoms and the duration of your cold). Also, given that alcohol dehydrates you, you should lay off the wine and cocktails until your 100-percent better.

Foods high in vitamins and minerals: Vitamins C, E and zinc are particularly essential when you have a cold. Be sure to include foods such as broccoli, tomato, chicken, red pepper, potatoes and oranges. Adding a zinc supplement to your routine while you’re under the weather may help you get well faster.
Steel-cut oats and other whole grain foods: You need to keep your energy up so complex carbs such as these are essential to your recovery.

Yogurt: The active cultures in yogurt are beneficial bacteria that may help you recover from the common cold—and consuming yogurt and other probiotic-rich foods on a regular basis when you’re not sick may help you better stave off sickness.
