Spring 2009 Fashion Trends

FW Trends

The hottest trends for spring and summer 2009 were launched in October during Toronto Fashion Week. Talented Canadian designers took to the runways under the big, white tents to showcase their style.

We saw a lot of prints, colours, a Grecian look and embellishments for the upcoming seasons.

Oversized flowers, stripes and abstract shapes were littered over tops and dresses. Lucian Matis was the king of soft prints with his billowy dresses.

Oranges, reds, yellows and purples stood out on the catwalks. These pops of colour were mixed with a lot of neutrals. Almost every designer showed the classic black and white look. The Karamea collection is a good example, which was studded with stunning purples.

Long dresses and off the shoulder looks were inspired by a Grecian theme. Have fun with strapless dresses and blouses with a ruffled front. Carlie Wong’s long, silk gowns epitomize this trend.

The back was the focus for most looks. Cuts were low and fun details were added to draw focus. You will look as good going as you did coming in these outfits. Ruffles, beading, chains, texture and femininity to this season.

Hemlines sat above the knee for daytime and long, flowy gowns took the night. The Joe Fresh nautical inspired shorts and bubble skirts all expose a little bit of leg. As for pants, they were shown in a slender silhouette to accentuate the body. Pink Tartan’s ankle length trousers fit beautifully. They are a classic that will carry you from season to season.

If you only buy a few new pieces this season we suggest you pick up a pair of shorts, a printed skirt or dress and a detailed blouse.
